We made an effort to leave a little earlier than originally planned and after the original rally point on the west bank, the group arrived at our second rally point in Kenner at Loyola and I-10.  Within seconds, we were on the interstate headed to our last pick up in Hammond.  Gina and the kids rode along with us in the van until our destinations required a different path.  The reality of the next two weeks without my family really sank in as we peeled off towards Monroe and they continued on towards St. Louis.

Our travels were blessed most of the day with only the threat of, but not the reality of rain before lunch. The threat was significant enough that Matt and I elected to suit up prior to leaving Hammond. This proved to be unnecessary, but who knows what might have happened if we hadn’t.

Lunch was at a local eatery called Catfish Charlie’s and I must say that the catfish was very, very good and just the way I like it…  thin and very crispy.  The shrimp were a disappointment, but the portion of the catfish was more than sufficient to make me feel as though the price was well earned.

Everyone suited up upon leaving Monroe and the skies seemed as though they were going to make that choice a wise one, however, we did not see rain until the last few hours of our trip, and it was never more than a light to moderate rain.  We did encounter some strong crosswinds and a few drivers that need more practice driving in the rain.  We all arrived at our hotel, the Staybridge Suites in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  The rooms are very nice and exactly my idea of camping!

Tomorrow seems to be an improvement in the weather conditions, but there is still a possibility that some of the roads that are on the itinerary will be in poor enough condition to make us consider an alternate route…
