New Windshield and GPS For The MP3 400ie

I started with the base model MP3 400ie on November 9, 2009 and had my local Piaggio dealer, The Transportation Revolution of New Orleans, order the color matched oem top case which is 48 liters in size and a perfect fit for the bike.  Shortly thereafter, I discovered the need for a taller windshield than the standard “fly screen.”  I choose the medium “comfort” windshield which seems to the the perfect level of protection from wind buffeting and inclement weather.  I also had my friends at ttrno add a battery tender to keep the battery properly “topped off.”

After a few hundred miles of riding… just a good weekend these days, but then a couple of weeks, I was ready for my first service which was due at 625 miles.  At this time, I had the techs at the shop add a Garmin Zumo 665 for me as well. This turned out to be a bit of a challenge for a few reasons.

  1. Mounting options are very limited on the MP3 400 due to the styling of the handlebars
  2. Affixing the XM antenna requires something metal to attach to because of the magnetic base plate
  3. Wiring in the Zumo mount presented its own challenges and for the first few months the in-line fuse would blow every third or fourth power cycle.

The addition of the comfort screen had the added benefit of two support arms that proved to be an ideal mounting point for a small diameter RAM mounting bracket to support the Zumo, but did little to help with identifying a location for the XM antenna.
